This is Dylan in the Emergency Room! He was jumping on the tramp with his cousins and his favorite Superman slippers. A few minutes later, he came in screaming. I guess he had slipped off the tramp and landed on his left arm. We thought maybe he had broken it, so being 9:30pm at night we took him down to the ER. After a few x-rays, they confirmed it wasn't broken...but he had dislocated his elbow. The Doctor said he had never seen a dislocation in such a weird position, and that if we hadn't brought him down when we did, then his arm would have broke itself by morning because of the pressure of the bones against each other. They tried a few times to pop it into place, but couldn't get it to go. It was horrible! Next they tried giving him a medication that was supposed to knock him out so the doctor wouldn't have to worry about hurting him while he tried working it back in. He said he'd be back in our room in 10 minutes, and expected Dylan to be completely asleep...well 45 minutes later he was still WIDE awake. The medicine seemed to have a weird effect on his body, but didn't respond the way it was supposed to. He was fully awake and totally conscious, but at the same time, he has having weird hallucinations and had no control over his body, he couldn't even hold up his own head. He was laughing uncontrollably "at this monkey that was coming out of the wall," and said "the monkey was playing peek-a-boo with him," all while still crying every now and then because the pain was so bad. The ER Dr. said our only other option was to try an IV sedation to put him out, but we opted out of that, thinking it would be more traumatic just trying to get the IV line in. So the Dr. explained to Dylan that they were going to have to try popping it in again, with which Dylan very soberly replied, "I am Iron-Man, do me your worst." The Dr. was laughing so hard, it took him a minute to regain his composure, but finally after a few more tries, and a few more nurses to help hold him down, they finally got his arm to pop back in. Thank goodness! He assured us that after all Dylan had been through (and with the added medication), he should sleep really good tonight. Well we left the Emergency Room at 1:30am. Seth and Lily fell right asleep as soon as they got in the car, but Dylan was still awake. It was so funny...he couldn't walk or hold up his own body at all, so I carried him to the car, and he just sat in his car seat, kinda slumped over sideways, but still laughing the whole way home about "this funny monkey he had seen." I stayed up with him 'til about 3:00am when he finally fell asleep next to me on the couch. What an Adventure! He was so brave and will have quite a story to tell all of his friends!
